Buckland House: A Love Letter to West Coast Modernism

Buckland House: A Love Letter to West Coast Modernism

We knew from the very beginning: this wasn’t just another project.
It was an honour. A responsibility. A once-in-a-career kind of moment.

A Home with a Legacy

Buckland House, perched high in the forested hillside of West Vancouver, arrived in our hands not as a blank canvas — but as a living piece of history. Built in 1951 by the iconic firm Thompson, Berwick & Pratt, the very architects who helped define and popularize West Coast Modernism, this home stood as a rare example of visionary architecture that still feels bold and relevant today.

Post-and-beam construction. Natural cedar cladding. Expansive panes of glass that dissolve the boundary between indoors and out. Every material, every proportion, every sightline — it all told a story of design rooted in place, light, and landscape. A house built not to impress, but to belong.

Our Mission: Restore and Reimagine

Our role? To listen. To preserve. To honour what made this home great — and gently bring it into the present without ever compromising its soul.

It was, without question, a huge project.
Not just in scale — though it certainly was that. But in meaning.
We didn’t just design spaces. We curated a dialogue between past and present.

Designing with Intention

This wasn’t about tearing down and building new. It was about asking: What does this home need to thrive today — without losing what makes it unforgettable?

So we got to work. We staged it with the kind of care reserved for something truly sacred. Every piece mattered. From the vintage furniture we sourced to echo its mid-century origins, to the natural materials and textures we layered in to bridge history with modern comfort.

Letting the House Lead

We brought in soft textiles that warmed up the space without overwhelming it. We chose art that whispered rather than shouted. We let the architecture lead — and filled in the gaps with love, restraint, and intention.

It was one of the most rewarding projects we’ve ever taken on.
And it reminded us — as all great homes do — that design isn’t just about style.
It’s about story.

The Next Chapter Begins

And now, Buckland House is ready for its next chapter.
For its next custodian. Its next admirer.

A true modernist gem.  A home that’s already stood the test of time, and still turns heads with its quiet, intelligent presence.

For those who know, this is more than a property.
It’s a chance to be part of design history.
To live in a home that was — and still is — ahead of its time.

We’re thrilled to share the before-and-after transformation with you now —  see what’s possible when vision, reverence, and architecture align.
